Engineering Study Abroad - Application Checklist
— Attend a UM Study Abroad Office general advising session
— Attend an engineering study abroad information session or meet with an engineering study abroad advisor
— Research and identify your study abroad program of choice
— Consult with your faculty advisor in your major about the program you are considering and review your course options with him/her
— Complete a program application (your application may require any combination of the following)
•Transcript
•Letter(s) of recommendation
•Personal statement, student essay, or biographical sketch
•List of courses in which you would like to enroll at the host institution
•Pay your deposit (if required)
— Complete the University of Maryland Study Abroad Application
— Apply for a passport or make sure that yours will not expire before your trip ends. It is important to do this early as it can take over a month to receive your passport.
Once you have been accepted:
— Complete the necessary paperwork (these forms are obtained at the UM Study Abroad Office)
•Permission to Study Abroad form (PSA)
•Study Abroad Procedures Form
•Study Abroad Budget
— Make your travel arrangements
— Obtain the necessary documents
— Obtain international health insurance or make sure you are covered abroad under your current provider (including insurance that will get you home should something serious occur)
— Finalize your finances and pay your tuition or program fees.
Once you arrive:
— Contact your family immediately and let them know you arrived and how you can be reached
— Notify International Engineering Programs of your arrival and your new address and phone number
— If you make any changes to your list of proposed courses, email the Engineering Study Abroad office and your major advisor for approvals
Upon your return:
— Schedule a re-entry interview with the International Engineering Programs office
•Make sure your study abroad transcript is received
•Make sure that all courses completed abroad have been approved
•Discuss your study abroad experience and make recommendations for future study abroad students
— Write a brief essay about your experience and provide a few photos for the International Engineering Programs website (optional)
