Studying Engineering Abroad: The Basics
Many students have similar questions when they first begin exploring their study abroad options. The information compiled here answers many of your basic questions so you can feel confident choosing the right program for you. For additional answers, see our FAQ page.
Engineering Credits
You may take engineering coursework abroad that will be credited toward your University of Maryland degree in Engineering. Major requirements, UM CORE, and elective credits may all be earned abroad. The way each course completed abroad will count toward your degree is determined by your department, which is why it is important to work closely with your departmental advisor in choosing which courses to enroll in while studying abroad. To help find the right courses for you, visit the web site for the Transfer Credit Center to see if courses at your chosen foreign university have already been approved for University of Maryland credit. Do not limit your selection to these courses, but use this as a starting point and have additional courses approved by your department.
Language
You are not required to speak a foreign language to study engineering abroad. While students with second language ability are encouraged to take courses in the native language of the host country, a number of programs offer coursework in English. Some of these programs are in non English-speaking countries, while others are in countries where English is the primary language. If you do plan to study engineering in a foreign language, you will need to show proficiency in that language to the advanced (300) level.
Studying Abroad & Your 4-Year Plan
Studying engineering abroad should not delay your anticipated graduation date. With the proper planning, most students study abroad and still graduate as planned and without altering their plan. Why is this a common myth? Because most students assume studying abroad requires taking a semester off of engineering: this is untrue. The programs featured here are designed for engineering students who want to complete some of their engineering coursework overseas.
Choosing a Location
There are several factors to consider when choosing a study abroad location, including the language of instruction, engineering disciplines offered, and your own desire to experience a new culture. When looking at programs, pay special attention to the brief description under each name for information on the engineering disciplines available and the language of instruction.
Money Matters
Most of your scholarships and other financial aid will apply to semester and year long study abroad programs. For most of the programs featured here, you will pay UM tuition while abroad, while paying other fees (e.g. housing) directly to your host university. Scholarships are also available to fund study abroad, but you should be aware that these rarely cover all expenses.
