How long can I study abroad?

Students may elect to study abroad for one or two semesters. Summer study programs and winter term courses are also available.

I have not studied a foreign language. Can I still study abroad?

Yes, there are several programs available to University of Maryland engineering students that do not require you to learn or be fluent in a foreign language. Many institutions offer programs where the engineering coursework is taught in English.

What types of programs are available for Engineering students to study abroad?

The Clark School offers several different opportunities for students to study abroad and/or work abroad during their college career. At present students can study or work abroad in many countries around the world including Europe, Asia, Australia , and North and South America.

In addition, students have the opportunity to intern abroad. Although internships typically occur during the summer, it is possible to complete an internship during the fall or spring semester.

Will it cost me more money to study abroad than to stay studying at UM?

Study abroad is affordable! Typically, when you participate in a semester or year long UM engineering study abroad program, you pay UM tuition plus room and board, travel and health insurance. If you participate in a Winterterm, summer program, an organized non-engineering or non-Maryland program, you usually pay a program fee. You may also elect to participate in study abroad programs where you pay tuition directly to the host institution.

Is there financial aid available to study abroad?

Yes, students who are currently receiving financial aid usually can apply that assistance toward their study abroad program. Federal financial aid will transfer to any program while state and University aid transfers to UM programs. In addition, there are specific scholarship and grant opportunities open to students studying abroad. Students should see the financial aid counselor for study abroad in the Office of Financial Aid, 1135 Lee Building.

What GPA do I need to study abroad?

Most programs require students to have a minimum GPA of 3.00. However there are several programs whose GPA requirements are lower. To be safe, students should try to maintain a good GPA.

Will I be able to graduate on time?

You can study abroad and still graduate on time. Your academic advisor will help you select an appropriate program and coursework.

Will I receive academic credit for the courses taken abroad?

Yes, with the approval of your advisor! Courses completed abroad are transferable to the University of Maryland and applicable to your degree requirements.

Where will I live?

Typically, the host institution will assist you in finding housing. Options include living with a host family or in student residence halls or apartments.

When can I start applying to study abroad?

You are eligible to study abroad as a junior or senior, however summer and winter programs are available for students at all levels. Deadlines to study abroad in spring semesters are typically in late September/early October and deadlines for fall semesters are usually in late February/early March.

Where can I get an application to study abroad?

For most engineering study abroad programs, you can get an application from the Engineering Special Programs Office in 1124 Glenn L. Martin Hall. Sometimes applications can also be found online at the host institution's website.

For general UM study abroad programs, you can pick up an application in the Study Abroad Office at 1101 Holzapfel Hall .
