International: Semester/Year Study Abroad Programs

German and Engineering Dual Degree Program
What is the German and Engineering Dual Degree Program?
This program allows students who are interested in German and engineering to earn two degrees by fulfilling requirements in both academic areas. The program is jointly sponsored by the Germanic Studies Department and the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Its purpose is to promote technology and cultural development for students interested in both areas. Participants will have the opportunity to study German and apply their knowledge in both subjects during their time in Germany. In students' senior year, program participants go to Germany in the spring for a two month intensive German language program in Germany. Students then work for 4-6 months either at a university in Berlin or in industry at Mannheim. Students who participate in this program will have proficiency in both engineering and German prior to their overseas experience.
Am I Eligible?
- Student must be enrolled in the Dual Degree German Program and follow the suggested course schedule
- Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
How much time will I spend in Germany and in school?
In students' final year, program participants go to Germany for approximately six months. The dual degree program is a minimum of five years. Participants will receive degrees in both programs and must earn a minimum of 150 credits.
What will I study?
The requirements include the standard engineering and science courses, the general education courses required for all students at the University of Maryland, and German courses in language, conversation and cultural background. Students will also have the option of living in the Language House on campus.
Where will I study in Germany?
Students spend eight weeks taking an intensive German language program in Tübingen or in other centers around Germany. The courses will enable you to have a successful work experience and will provide you with course credit in German toward degree completion.
Where will I work?
After you complete the required language courses, students will then go to Mannheim or the Technical University of Berlin for a four-month paid internship in German industry or a University lab. Your internship will lead to additional credits toward your German degree.
What will it cost me?
You will pay a fee prior to leaving for Germany which covers tuition, housing and meals during the intensive German language program, and the placement in an internship. Internships are paid and should provide a stipend that will cover room and board during this period. Airfare, personal and miscellaneous expenses are not included.
When must I apply for my internship?
Students should apply for their semester in Germany by July 1, the summer prior to their Spring semester abroad.
Suggested Course Schedule
The undergraduate major in Germanic Studies consists of 36 hours beyond the basic language acquisition sequence (GERM 101-201). No course completed with a grade lower than "C" may be used to satisfy the major requirements. Three program options lead to the Bachelor of Arts degree: 1) German language, 2) German literature, and 3) Germanic area studies. Students should work with an advisor in the German Department to plan a course of study for the German degree. A number of German courses can be used to fulfill requirements of the CORE general education program.
