Politecnico di Milano Exchange Program

What is the Milan Program?

The exchange program at the Politecnico di Milano will provide interested engineering students with the opportunity to build on their knowledge in the field of engineering and at the same time introduce them to new cultures and lifestyles. Students will choose from a selection of engineering courses instructed in English or enroll in regular courses in Italian if they have Italian language proficiency. Students who have interest in European cultures are suggested to apply for this program.

Why the Milan Exchange Program?

The History
from http://wikitravel.org
Milan offers the visitor a large variety of art museums, mainly of Italian Renaissance and Baroque. Few also know that Milan has the oldest churches in Italy (they are older than the ones in Rome because Milan was the capital of the Northern part of the late Roman Empire). Some of the more famous churches in Milan include the Duomo, Saint Mary of the Graces, Saint Ambrose, and Saint Maurice.

The Fashion & Art
from www.lonelyplanet.com
Armani, Versace, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Pucci, Gucci and many more took off on Milan’s runways. Fashionistas make a pilgrimage here to shop at the designers’ flagship stores in the Quadrilatero d’Oro (Golden Quad). Boutiques stocking emerging labels, and chic concept shops also line the city’s streets, while discount outlets selling samples, seconds and last season’s cast-offs are a bargain-hunter’s Holy Grail. Milan is also the world capital of furniture and home wares (the beanbag is a Milanese brainchild), and a hub for risk-taking contemporary art.

The Cuisine
from http://wikitravel.org
Although Milan is a city that changes its mind as quickly as fashion trends come and go, it remains one of the strongest bastions of traditional Italian cooking, where homemade elements are still very much praised and appreciated. There are trattorias, inns and restaurants everywhere that offer traditional Milanese dishes to eat. This city's solid cooking is based on filling dishes like osso buco (braised veal shanks) and risotto alla milanese (chicken-broth risotto made fragrant with saffron).

Am I Eligible?

Qualified students must have:

  • A minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Achieve junior standing in their engineering courses at the time of travel
  • Plan to enroll in at least 9 credits of engineering coursework while in Milan

How much time will I spend in Milan?

Students in the Milan Exchange Program will spend one semester of study in Milan.

What will I study?

It is highly recommended that students complete ITAL100 or higher before applying to the program.  The Milan Exchange Program offers select courses in engineering as well as Italian language.  There is a separate application for the Italian courses, about which students will receive further information after being accepted to the exchange program.  There will be an entry test for the Italian course and students will be placed accordingly at one of four levels from very beginning to advanced.

University of Maryland course equivalencies appear in red. Courses without a UM course number have yet to be evaluated and may be evaluated by a student’s departmental advisor on an individual basis. Course credits are in Italian format and information on their UM equivalencies will be available soon.

Where will I live?

Students on the Milan Exchange Program will live in student residences or apartments in or around the city of Milan.  A double room will cost approximately 150€ per month.

What will it cost me?

Costs include University of Maryland tuition, health insurance, and transportation costs. Housing costs and meals are the responsibility of the student.

How do I apply for the program?

Interested students should:

  • complete the online application;
  • indicate "studesk8" as the studesk of reference on the online application; and
  • submit all supplemental materials to Caine Francis.  Do not send any materials directly to the Politecnico di Milano.
