The Permission to Study Abroad form is necessary to guarantee that you gain credit for courses taken at a foreign institution should you complete them successfully. Pick up your form by taking your acceptance letter from your study abroad program and a list of proposed courses to the Study Abroad Office (1101 Holzapfel Hall).

  • List your proposed courses on the PSA in the columns “Host Institution Course Prefix #” and “Host Institution Course Name”
  • Study Abroad Office staff will list the amount of transfer credits to be received for each course in the column “Amount of Transfer Credit.”

Take the form with the above information to your departmental advisor, along with descriptions of the courses listed. At this meeting, your advisor will read the course descriptions and determine how each course will count toward your degree requirements.

  • In the column “Applicability to Degree,” your advisor must indicate the applicability of each course to your degree.
  • If a course is being applied as a major requirement, you advisor will write “M” in this column AND must write the UM course prefix and number (i.e. ENFP 405)
  • If a course is being applied as an upper-level elective for your major, your advisor will write “EN-- 4xx” or “Upper-Level Elective” in this column.
  • If a course is being applied as a technical elective for your major, your advisor will write “Tech Elective” in this column.
  • For every course being applied to your engineering major, your advisor MUST provide a signature on the relevant line in the “Signature of Evaluator/Advisor” column. This means your advisor will be signing on more than one line within this column.
  • For courses being applied as UM CORE requirements, contact Caine Francis for instructions on this approval process.

Once you have all necessary signatures, take your PSA to the International Engineering Programs Office to receive a signature on behalf of the “Dean (or designate).” The pink and gold copies of this form will remain with the Engineering International Program Office
