Australia

Energy Tomorrow: An Engineering and Management Perspective
Darwin - Sydney, Australia from June 22 to August 4, 2008
This 6-week program is for engineering students who wish to explore energy and sustainability with a focus on new developments in energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. The program is based on a ninety-hour combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, demonstrations, site visits, computer simulations, assignments, and discussion periods. It also includes a three-day camping expedition into Kakadu National Park.

England

Chemical Engineering Laboratory in London Summer Program
This program, offered through Georgia Tech, will allow UMD ChBEs to earn credit for ENCH 437 (Chemical Engineering Laboratory) and ENCH 468L (Special topics in ChBE: Unit Operations—London). Credit will be earned through Georgia Tech and treated as transfer credit by UMD. Deadline for first payment with application: January 15, 2008.

France

GEA Summer Aerospace Program
Toulouse - Marseille - Poitiers, France (dates to be determined)
Five week summer study abroad program for junior and senior aerospace students that includes lectures, field trips, and visits to industrial aerospace and historical sites. The courses and visits are conducted in English and held in the French cities of Toulouse, Marseille, and Poitiers. The program is worth six credits. Cost is 2200 Euros (approximately $2600) and includes tuition, room and board (breakfasts and lunches weekdays only) and transportation within France. It does not include travel from the USA to Toulouse and back. Deadline to be determined

Summer Study in the French Alps
Grenoble, France from June 23 to July 18, 2008
A six-week program that combines an intensive French language course (30 hours) and a choice of modules in culture, science, and technology (60 hours) sponsored by INPGrenoble.

IIWE 2008: Women Engineers: Managing Resources Sustainably
Paris, France from July 5 to July 25, 2008
The goal of this international 3-week non technical seminar is to present the challenges women face as international engineers and prepare them for the future.  The program includes ample opportunities for industrial site visits, networking, and tourism. All sessions take place in English and the seminar is open to women and men.

Study French in Paris
Paris and Sceaux, France from July 7 to August 29, 2008
Students will receive 21 hours of teaching per week for a 2 week session, however students may complete up to 8 weeks of the French language program. In addition to learning to speak French, students will also be offered brief courses on the French approach to engineering and technical vocabulary as well as an introduction to France, which includes brief courses on intercultural issues, France's past and present, and museum visits.

Summer Internship in France (pdf)
Through ENSI Bourges, engineering students may apply for summer internship opportunities in France.  Students should be entering their undergraduate senior year (by coursework) in the fall semester following the summer internship, or be a current Clark School graduate student.  Internships are conducted in English, and program dates are flexible.

Technological University of Lorraine (INPL)
Nancy, France (dates to be determined)
This summer program for undergraduate students offers an opportunity to discover INPL, and provides intensive French language courses combined with cultural activities.  Also featured are multidisciplinary seminars in French and visits to research institutions and industrial companies relevant to seminar topics.  This year the courses offered are Discovery of Beer, Discovering Ancient and Modern Materials, Protection of the Environment - Industrial Challenges, and Innovation and Creativity.  Students must have completed two semesters of French language (or equivalent) and be of junior or senior standing.

Project Management in Paris
Paris, France (dates to be determined)
The objective of the Project Management program is to provide fundamental knowledge to students interested in careers in project management.  Lasting 5 weeks, the program is instructed by industrialists and their consultants, includes work on a group project, and offers visits to various companies in the region.  The program is instructed in English, and is open to juniors and seniors.

Germany

Hessen International Summer University Kassel 2008
Kassel, Germany from June 21 to July 19, 2008
Held at the University of Kassel, Germany, this program "New Perspectives for a Globalized World: Environmental and Cultural Dimensions" includes seminars include Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering, German Studies, German language, workshops and excursions.  Students will stay with host families in Kassel for this program. Early Bird Discount deadline is April 1, 2008.

Spain

Summer Internship Program in Spain
This program provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain international work experience, improve Spanish language skills, and experience Spanish culture firsthand. Participants complete an unpaid three-month internship in companies across Spain. Must be a junior or senior to participate and must be able to function in a Spanish-speaking work environment.

Southeast Asia

Vietnam: Development & Culture
Can Tho, Vietnam from May 20 to July 1, 2007
This program provides students with the opportunity to enroll in two courses in addition to participation in a building project, which will be the construction of a two room primary school in a Vietnamese village.  Course offerings for 2007 are Sustainability, Development, and Society: The Case of Vietnam; Civil & Environmental Engineering 4984: Project Management in the Global Village; and Introduction to Vietnamese Culture & Society.  No prerequisites are required in engineering or Vietnamese.

Sustainable Development in Southeast Asia
Integrating the natural sciences with sociology, law, political science and economics, this program introduces students to the complex development problems of the Mekong region.  Over six weeks, students will travel to Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia and complete two courses: "Theories and Concepts in Sustainable Development" and "Special Issues with Development in South-East Asia"  for a total of 6 - 8 U.S. credit hours.
