Helpful Tips and Advice

Looking to get involved?

If you are looking to find a position to practice your leadership skills, decide what type of opportunity you would like to pursue.  Interested in leading a classroom? Pursue a teaching position.  Would you like to join a research team?  Find a lab that fits your academic interests.

In order to gain the most from a leadership experience, find something in which you are truly interested.

Take Initiative

Often times, lab positions are available for undergraduate students.  If you find a lab that does research which you are interested in, contact the lab director to express your interest.

Other organizations and departments on campus may be willing to accept assistants, too.  If you are interested, it never hurts to ask!

A Student's Advice on Networking

"Establish a strong relationship with a professor whose research/academic interests match yours; if you are interested in a specific field of research and do not know how to become involved, ask your mentor to provide a list of people whom you might talk to."
