
UniStar Nuclear is sponsoring a Scholarship/Internship Program to encourage students to consider careers and employment in the power industry. UniStar Nuclear is jointly owned by Constellation Energy and Areva, Inc. - leaders in the nuclear power industry. Together as UniStar Nuclear, this team is pioneering a new path forward, developing a new fleet of advanced design nuclear power plants.
The UniStar Scholarship is $5000 for the first year and can be renewed for up to $10,000 in the second year provided the criteria to remain in the program are met. Participating students will be offered an internship during the summers following their sophomore and junior years, unless an alternative agreement is arranged. Eligibility and Evaluation
- Full-time enrollment (minimum of 12 credits per semester)
- Minimum GPA of 3.25
- Declared major in nuclear, mechanical, civil/structural, chemical or electrical engineering or power generation
- Completion of at least two academic years (as of summer 2007) with no more than three academic years remaining before graduation
- Meet U.S. Government eligibility to work in the nuclear power industry (U.S. Citizens and U.S. Permanent Residents)
- Pass all entry requirements such as drug and alcohol screen, psychological exam, background investigation and badge requirements as required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and/or UniStar Nuclear.
Scholarship Process
The scholarship process includes an application and an interview.
Submit your current resume, student statement, and current transcript to Jane Fines (jfines@umd.edu) by May 2, 2008. The resume and student statement should be submitted electronically in one attachment as either a MS Word document or a PDF document. Submit a hard copy of your transcript. Your student statement should address your interest in the power industry (particularly nuclear power industry). You should also review the eligibility and evaluation factors noted on the program fact sheets (see links above) in case you want to address any of those factors through your resume or student statement.
Interviews will be scheduled by the Engineering Co-op & Career Services office.
