Summer Programs: Discovering Engineering
Spend a week discovering if engineering is for you at the University of Maryland. Live on campus, meet faculty, tour one-of-a-kind labs and facilities, and learn about the various engineering disciplines offered at the University of Maryland.
Program Dates
Session 1: July 26-August 1, 2009 (Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning)
Session 2: August 2-August 8, 2009 (Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning)
The Academic Program
During the week, you will have an opportunity to explore the different engineering disciplines. You will participate in a variety of activities including laboratory work and demonstrations, lectures, discussions, computer instruction and a team design project. You will visit each of the engineering majors to learn more about the specific departments and their special projects. Within the network of support provided by the instructors, program advisors, teaching fellows, and peers, you will have the opportunity to build self-confidence in applying your math, science and engineering skills.
Experience Campus Living
Students in the program will experience the life of a college student by living in a residence hall during the program. Undergraduate residence assistants will manage the residential area. The RAs will live with you in the residence hall, plan social activities, and be a resource for you throughout the program.
Eligibility
Students entering the 11th or 12th grade in Fall 2009 are eligible to apply. Due to a limited number of spaces, we are only able to accept 30 students for each session of the program. We encourage men and women students who have a strong interest in engineering, mathematics and/or science to apply.
Cost
The fee of $1,000 covers all expenses except transportation to and from the university and spending money.
Do not include payment with the application. The camp fee will be due when you are accepted to the program. A limited number of partial scholarships are available, based on financial need. Students must demonstrate need as determined by the National School Lunch Program. Please review the scholarship application for more information.
Application Information
Discovering Engineering is no longer accepting applications for the 2009 camps. All spaces have been filled, and we have a lengthy waitlist. Please consider participating in the WIE LEAD Academies for other opportunities in engineering
